WEBVTT

00:00.000 --> 00:15.000
One, our next talk is presentation by Peter Mackles and Victoria Noyman from Fettie variety.

00:15.000 --> 00:19.000
Oh, wow, lots of excitement about Fettie variety.

00:19.000 --> 00:21.000
Well, great.

00:21.000 --> 00:25.000
Thanks for giving them a welcome and let's see what they have to say.

00:26.000 --> 00:27.000
So, hello.

00:27.000 --> 00:30.000
Who of you is actually on the Fettieverse? Hands up.

00:30.000 --> 00:31.000
Yes.

00:31.000 --> 00:33.000
Lots of people in the room.

00:33.000 --> 00:36.000
Who of you follows a public administration?

00:36.000 --> 00:39.000
Oh, quite a few people as well.

00:39.000 --> 00:40.000
Okay.

00:40.000 --> 00:44.000
Who of you is from a public administration that has a account.

00:44.000 --> 00:45.000
Okay.

00:45.000 --> 00:46.000
Well, good.

00:50.000 --> 00:51.000
I have.

00:51.000 --> 00:52.000
Thank you.

00:52.000 --> 00:59.000
So, we study Fettieverse integration in public administration.

00:59.000 --> 01:02.000
We are part of Fettie variety.

01:02.000 --> 01:06.000
And we are juggling the Fettieverse.

01:06.000 --> 01:10.000
Thank you, Anel Met, actually, for funding us.

01:10.000 --> 01:12.000
And thanks as well.

01:12.000 --> 01:16.000
Go to the Dutch CIO government and the city of Amsterdam.

01:16.000 --> 01:22.000
For supporting our uncomference coming in March in Amsterdam.

01:22.000 --> 01:26.000
An uncomference based actually on our findings.

01:26.000 --> 01:32.000
The findings from our research reports and fueled with stories from all of us.

01:32.000 --> 01:36.000
Please look at the topic there if you can.

01:36.000 --> 01:41.000
And for discussion, you know, and take part if you're available.

01:41.000 --> 01:45.000
Try to open up new chapters of history.

01:46.000 --> 01:51.000
So, this is a very short sneak peek about our research journey.

01:51.000 --> 01:58.000
We're going to picture you the calls and the case of our study as well as the consequences.

01:58.000 --> 02:08.000
Plus, if we have enough time, we'll share a story with you from our famous lookbook.

02:08.000 --> 02:18.000
But before diving into our case, the study, what was actually our calls for this thing.

02:18.000 --> 02:27.000
We went actually to a keynote titled Fettieverse integration, why we try, and why we fail.

02:27.000 --> 02:33.000
At the freedom of fear, uncomference in 2022, in a dazzling keynote speech,

02:33.000 --> 02:43.000
European data protection supervisor pointed us to their failure to integrate the Fettieverse into public admin.

02:43.000 --> 02:52.000
And he called out to reach out to the politicians, to the parliament.

02:52.000 --> 02:56.000
And that's actually that's something that we crossed our minds.

02:56.000 --> 03:02.000
Immediately following that kind of appeal as a step of that stage, we approached that professor.

03:02.000 --> 03:07.000
And we challenged him that this wasn't a failure,

03:07.000 --> 03:13.000
especially not regarding the numbers for their Fettieverse accounts.

03:13.000 --> 03:22.000
So he came back to very next day to have a workshop on their failing U-voice video pilot.

03:22.000 --> 03:27.000
And here, our circus took off.

03:28.000 --> 03:38.000
So the first result after some grading was that we came up with a page for an advertisement campaign on pawnhop,

03:38.000 --> 03:46.000
to promote alternative social media to politicians during the European elections.

03:46.000 --> 03:49.000
Unfortunately, no funding for this case yet.

03:50.000 --> 03:53.000
Maybe the next selection circle.

03:53.000 --> 03:58.000
But this idea dragged us in into the European maze.

03:58.000 --> 04:07.000
So, the case, the coding code, failing case, the subject of our study, U-voice and U-videal.

04:07.000 --> 04:12.000
In order to do our research, we had an absolute fabulous trip.

04:12.000 --> 04:19.000
To get a grip, we proposed a research study about the U-voice and U-videal case.

04:19.000 --> 04:30.000
So now, if you want to close your eyes, take a deep breath.

04:30.000 --> 04:40.000
The EDPS pilot project, U-videal Stroke video, was one of the first to integrate self-instead Fettieverse instances into cross-institutional public administration.

04:40.000 --> 04:48.000
For this research, Fettieveriety examined data on the creation, usage, and experience of the 40 institutionally U-voice,

04:48.000 --> 04:53.000
Master Don, and 60 U-videal, peer-to-go accounts.

04:53.000 --> 05:05.000
Fettieveriety made freedom of information requests to 21 institutions, resulting in documents like reports, correspondence, presentations, manuals, and evaluation reports.

05:05.000 --> 05:12.000
They also conducted 10 interviews with individuals involved in the pilot and beyond, such as the Dutch government pilot,

05:12.000 --> 05:15.000
and the wider open source community pushing for the Fettieverse.

05:15.000 --> 05:24.000
Therefore, Fettieveriety attended various events, including lobby events, policy meetings, advocacy priorities, tech conferences,

05:24.000 --> 05:32.000
at gatherings, to observe, and to have intimate conversations about the complex interplay of power and seduction in the European maze.

05:32.000 --> 05:39.000
By the way, this study uses a blend of qualitative research method based on an document analysis and grounded theory.

05:39.000 --> 05:50.000
Fettieveriety's overall aim is to provide policy recommendations and comprehensive guides for public administration's interest in self-hosting alternatives of decentralized and federated social media.

05:50.000 --> 05:56.000
The insights and recommendations from this study will be discussed at the notes on a web-unconference.

05:56.000 --> 06:01.000
So, darling, why not open some new chapters of history?

06:02.000 --> 06:13.000
So, what have we actually learned from Fettieveriety adoption in public administration?

06:13.000 --> 06:20.000
It's totally doable. It is a success. It's cheap. It doesn't cost much to deploy.

06:20.000 --> 06:25.000
Many governments already have the infrastructure and the people able to do it.

06:25.000 --> 06:34.000
And find the right budget here is a bit of the key. But we think it's doable, especially if we want to do it a bit more long term.

06:34.000 --> 06:41.000
It's also easy. We found that admin and moderation wasn't much of an issue for the people we interviewed.

06:41.000 --> 06:50.000
And thanks to many pilots, like the one from ADPS, there's a lot of resources out there, like GDPR compliant terms and conditions.

06:50.000 --> 06:57.000
And while I say it's easy, governance is still work, but that's a responsibility.

06:57.000 --> 07:08.000
But most importantly, it was fun. Our participant really liked the conversations that they had on the Fettiever's and the engagements they had.

07:08.000 --> 07:15.000
They even liked the collaborations that it created cross-institutionally in the cross communities as well.

07:15.000 --> 07:23.000
And they did enjoy experimenting with it, what works and how it works and what works for them and what not.

07:23.000 --> 07:33.000
So, if it's cheap fun and easy, why isn't there a more wide scale adoption of this?

07:34.000 --> 07:41.000
So, what we found was also a very European story in a way.

07:41.000 --> 07:48.000
There's a little bit of funding here and a little bit of a budget there for a pilot, some prototypes, some features.

07:48.000 --> 07:57.000
And sometimes they're labeled as a failure, but often they're actually a great success, if not, a learning experience.

07:58.000 --> 08:05.000
But then it stops and has to take grip and GI for all its shortcomings.

08:05.000 --> 08:15.000
But what we also found was that it was a very common open-source story, as in that it's not as easy to use.

08:15.000 --> 08:21.000
It's kind of difficult in many aspects and it's not quite fit for purpose.

08:21.000 --> 08:24.000
But we believe that it can be.

08:24.000 --> 08:31.000
And we have to be a bit more daring and thinking long-term and take responsibility.

08:31.000 --> 08:36.000
But we also need to take care of our communities while we do it.

08:36.000 --> 08:44.000
To quote one of our participants, the Fettiever's is an easy vehicle to work together on a digital comments.

08:44.000 --> 08:51.000
So we invite you to step into an era of collective sense making, even if we fail sometimes.

08:51.000 --> 08:57.000
And discuss what well use we want to see reflected, maybe also beyond data protection.

08:57.000 --> 09:03.000
What we would like to see developed and a roadmap on how to get there.

09:03.000 --> 09:08.000
But we can only bring our stories to you.

09:08.000 --> 09:11.000
What we need are your stories.

09:11.000 --> 09:14.000
And now.

09:14.000 --> 09:16.000
Ta-da.

09:16.000 --> 09:19.000
The logbook then.

09:19.000 --> 09:29.000
It's a logbook we gathered actually based on our stories based on genuine quotes from real people we interviewed.

09:29.000 --> 09:39.000
We encountered regarding actual events, all related to Fettiever's integration in public administration.

09:39.000 --> 09:45.000
Stories with a little Fettieveriety twist, of course.

09:45.000 --> 09:53.000
To help us understand actually the challenges that we face in the Fettiever's as a public space.

09:53.000 --> 10:04.000
One has to step into particular situations together and discuss these situations from all possible angles.

10:04.000 --> 10:10.000
So this is imagine our logbook menu where you're assembled with lots of quotes and lots of stories.

10:10.000 --> 10:15.000
And we just pick one out of it that I'm going to tell you.

10:15.000 --> 10:25.000
Mind in this, that our personal logbooks recorded the experiences, doubts, excitements, challenges, opportunities,

10:25.000 --> 10:34.000
loves and hopes of some of the people we met on this fantastic journey.

10:34.000 --> 10:37.000
May 11th, 2024.

10:37.000 --> 10:43.000
So I was a letter to myself before hitting the button, before starting,

10:43.000 --> 10:47.000
shaping a rock into a ball.

10:47.000 --> 10:51.000
Navigating the European Union resembles an intimate dance.

10:51.000 --> 10:59.000
Challenging as we strive to shape a stubborn rock into a smooth ball, difficult yet thrilling.

10:59.000 --> 11:05.000
Hidden in the shadows of public institutions are the resistance we encounter,

11:05.000 --> 11:10.000
emerging only when they attempt to breach tricky communication barriers.

11:10.000 --> 11:16.000
In high stakes environments like the EU, trust and courage.

11:16.000 --> 11:22.000
Trust and courage are crucial yet often held close, like sweet secrets.

11:22.000 --> 11:30.000
The stakes are high and willingness to engage can feel in this seemingly limited.

11:30.000 --> 11:36.000
To tackle these challenges, we established an advisory office for unsolicited devices

11:36.000 --> 11:43.000
and became an accredited organization within the EU transparency registered meaning where lobbyists currently.

11:44.000 --> 11:53.000
Our interview here, likened our quest for Fediver's integration to the intimate art of shaking a rock into a ball,

11:53.000 --> 11:57.000
just as that requires passion and dedication.

11:57.000 --> 12:01.000
We aim to innovate public administration with new technologies.

12:01.000 --> 12:08.000
The journey is fraught with resistance, complex regulations, and historical burdens.

12:08.000 --> 12:12.000
Yet, the rewards, people, the rewards.

12:13.000 --> 12:20.000
And enhanced transparency and deeper citizen engagement shine brightly.

12:20.000 --> 12:29.000
Ultimately, shaping a rock into a ball reminds us all that meaningful change, the emancipations and resilience.

12:29.000 --> 12:39.000
As we strive for a responsive and inclusive public admin in this captivating digital age, that is on fire.

12:39.000 --> 12:44.000
Let's keep juggling the Fediver's and get involved.

12:44.000 --> 12:47.000
Please, get involved.

12:47.000 --> 12:54.000
Thank you.

12:54.000 --> 13:03.000
We have some online actually for people out there who are hooking or who are willing to take all kinds of questions now and in the future.

13:03.000 --> 13:04.000
All right.

13:04.000 --> 13:12.000
Do we have questions for our friends from Fediver ID? Any questions?

13:12.000 --> 13:18.000
Anyone need to run down on the various icons that are on the Fediver ID logbook menu?

13:18.000 --> 13:19.000
Description?

13:19.000 --> 13:22.000
No?

13:22.000 --> 13:24.000
There we go.

13:24.000 --> 13:32.000
Hi.

13:32.000 --> 13:35.000
First of all, thank you so much.

13:35.000 --> 13:39.000
Your storytelling is the kind of experience that the Fediver needs.

13:39.000 --> 13:48.000
So I ask for everyone for another round of applause, specifically for that.

13:48.000 --> 13:50.000
More circles on the Fedivers.

13:50.000 --> 14:08.000
I wanted to ask you, your approach seems very European and broad, but I'm wondering if you have any experience or if you had any feedback or what are your thoughts specifically regarding small small institutions like little municipalities, towns.

14:08.000 --> 14:19.000
Because I think the approach bottom up can start specifically from those institutions that are already in the public sector, but are tiny and maybe easier to approach.

14:19.000 --> 14:23.000
Yeah, that's a very nice question.

14:23.000 --> 14:24.000
Thank you.

14:24.000 --> 14:34.000
What we actually are now looking for also for the unconference is people who are already having experience with the Fedivers and who are maybe from smaller institutions.

14:34.000 --> 14:43.000
We think that there is a lot of resources in the lovely community out there that can help you along if you want to do Fediver's adoption.

14:43.000 --> 14:53.000
We kind of like in it oftentimes as in, well, it's like a second hand bike that you get from a, I don't know, a flowmark.

14:53.000 --> 14:56.000
Yeah, the frame is really a good piece of engineering.

14:56.000 --> 15:00.000
It's really there, but the saddle needs replacement, the brakes might not work.

15:00.000 --> 15:03.000
And while you're writing it, you encounter many other issues.

15:03.000 --> 15:08.000
And what we need is that we want to hear what the issues are.

15:08.000 --> 15:17.000
From the people who are using it every day, especially people who are doing the communication part and, yeah, who are using it.

15:17.000 --> 15:27.000
So we would really like to see more people coming because our focus was we started out with the you, you wasn't your video pilot.

15:27.000 --> 15:36.000
And then it kind of breached out during our research to the Dutch pilot as well and some of the wider community, but we want to see more.

15:36.000 --> 15:46.000
So, so far, we haven't really approached anyone yet, we can write up some of the results, but even for us, it's a bit hard because some of the recommendations that we can give is very specific.

15:46.000 --> 15:55.000
And especially when it comes to public institutions, they're very contextualized and that's why we would like to hear more stories.

15:55.000 --> 15:59.000
Do you have any other questions?

15:59.000 --> 16:04.000
If not, oh, we do.

16:04.000 --> 16:32.000
So, I have a feeling that I have a feeling that one of the biggest challenges to use Fedverse applications in the public sector is that the C-sad means and the IT people don't have knowledge and don't have the training to use them and install them and resolve problems because they are going out of the school.

16:32.000 --> 16:38.000
They're getting a certification from Microsoft, they're getting a certification from Cisco.

16:38.000 --> 16:43.000
But this is my feeling, is this something that you are seeing a lot?

16:43.000 --> 16:51.000
I do see it in the wider open source community that there is a lack of getting the good techies into open source, yes.

16:51.000 --> 16:59.000
But what we can see from our research is that it's not that hard to actually like host and instance.

16:59.000 --> 17:04.000
If you have a little bit of this admin, even if you don't, if you use one in your host, right?

17:04.000 --> 17:14.000
It takes you like maximum three hours to actually set it up and then it's like what 30 minutes to hours a month to actually do that.

17:14.000 --> 17:22.000
So, I don't think that the threshold for the admin people in public administration is that high for that adoption.

17:22.000 --> 17:25.000
It's just like, are there already part of our communities?

17:25.000 --> 17:37.000
And if they are, they're very open to it. And if you find someone in your own local administration or like, you know somebody who works for, I don't know, a hospital or a library who does that IT stuff.

17:37.000 --> 17:40.000
If you poke them, they often get the bull rolling.

17:40.000 --> 17:50.000
So, yeah, it's both that we need to find the people who are already part of our communities and nourish them and get them to do stuff.

17:50.000 --> 17:57.000
And also the ones that we kind of forgotten about last couple of years to get them back in.

17:57.000 --> 18:01.000
It has like, thank you so much. Thank you.
