WEBVTT

00:00.000 --> 00:11.000
It is a light morning, it must have been a lot of party class nights, somewhere in Fossham

00:11.000 --> 00:12.000
and Brussels.

00:12.000 --> 00:14.000
Okay.

00:14.000 --> 00:17.000
I don't remember it being this quiet on the Sunday morning.

00:17.000 --> 00:20.000
Raid, do you remember?

00:20.000 --> 00:21.000
It is.

00:21.000 --> 00:23.000
The goal room is quiet too.

00:23.000 --> 00:27.000
Well, all right, it's 9 o'clock and because of the live stream schedule,

00:27.000 --> 00:29.000
we're just going to get started on time.

00:29.000 --> 00:32.000
So good morning folks.

00:32.000 --> 00:36.000
Welcome to the community bedroom, the people side of open source.

00:36.000 --> 00:39.000
I'm Shirley Bales and I'll be your host today.

00:39.000 --> 00:44.000
I'm hosting alone, which is also my first time hosting and it's slightly unexpected

00:44.000 --> 00:46.000
hosting alone.

00:46.000 --> 00:50.000
But I wanted to say a quick thank you to my co-host who isn't actually here today.

00:50.000 --> 00:54.000
She had family things to take care of, Laura Chakowski.

00:54.000 --> 00:57.000
She couldn't be in here in person, but I also wanted to thank Floor Dries,

00:57.000 --> 01:04.000
who is up there, high floor, and Orlin Vasilev for the work on the committee with us.

01:04.000 --> 01:08.000
And to the other volunteers, we'll have throughout the day managing the bedroom.

01:08.000 --> 01:13.000
These bedrooms don't run themselves, so we're really thankful and grateful for the time and effort

01:13.000 --> 01:16.000
that makes all this work possible.

01:16.000 --> 01:21.000
When we reviewed the series proposals, I think we had about 98 of them.

01:21.000 --> 01:24.000
A few themes came through loud and clear.

01:24.000 --> 01:27.000
First, sustainability is no longer optional.

01:27.000 --> 01:31.000
Whether you're a solo maintainer, a foundation, a company backed project,

01:31.000 --> 01:36.000
or someone who's trying to find your place, every community is wrestling with health,

01:36.000 --> 01:39.000
long-term health, governance, and succession.

01:39.000 --> 01:43.000
And especially funding these days.

01:43.000 --> 01:46.000
Second, AI is changing contributor behavior.

01:46.000 --> 01:51.000
Sometimes it accelerates participation, and sometimes it overwhelms maintainers.

01:51.000 --> 01:55.000
Several talks today will reflect real questions about the synthetic senior,

01:55.000 --> 01:59.000
contributor noise, and what mentorship looks like in this new era.

01:59.000 --> 02:05.000
Third, burnout continues to show up as a structural issue, not an individual failing.

02:05.000 --> 02:07.000
This is a really important point.

02:07.000 --> 02:11.000
A lot of invisible labor holds all of these communities together,

02:11.000 --> 02:15.000
and many of today's sessions are going to look at what's working, what isn't,

02:15.000 --> 02:17.000
and where we can all do better.

02:17.000 --> 02:21.000
And finally, diversity of participation matters.

02:21.000 --> 02:27.000
We saw proposals from students, civic tech groups, security foundations, hobbyists,

02:27.000 --> 02:31.000
tiny teams, large organizations, people from all over the world.

02:31.000 --> 02:35.000
And it's a good reminder that community isn't just one model.

02:35.000 --> 02:40.000
Our goal today isn't to present a single answer to how you build a community.

02:40.000 --> 02:45.000
It's to make space for practical tactics, cautionary tales, and experiments that are worth learning from.

02:45.000 --> 02:48.000
For each of us to take back to our own communities.

02:48.000 --> 02:52.000
So a few quick housekeeping notes, not that it's a super packed room at the moment,

02:52.000 --> 02:55.000
but we're trying to get people to come in through one door and leave through here.

02:55.000 --> 02:58.000
So when the session ends, if you guys don't mind heading out through this door here,

02:58.000 --> 03:00.000
help us keep the room clean.

03:00.000 --> 03:05.000
We do have an enormous amount of candy to get your day going if you want some sugar.

03:05.000 --> 03:09.000
And if you do have questions in QA part, can you just please wait to the end

03:09.000 --> 03:14.000
when the speakers are done, and then we'll hand the mic around the room for a Q&A session.

03:14.000 --> 03:16.000
So one quick heads up before we start.

03:16.000 --> 03:18.000
We do have a schedule change today.

03:18.000 --> 03:21.000
We, unfortunately, have someone had to travel issues.

03:21.000 --> 03:25.000
So there's a session at 1240, the partnerships at power community session.

03:25.000 --> 03:28.000
That's going to be replaced by a community talk.

03:28.000 --> 03:32.000
By Katherine Druckman, hopefully, over there, now that I've put you on the spot,

03:32.000 --> 03:34.000
you have no choice but to take it.

03:34.000 --> 03:36.000
And we'll update these schedule pages.

03:36.000 --> 03:38.000
We get a little bit closer.

03:38.000 --> 03:42.000
And finally, this room follows the Fossham Code of Conduct.

03:42.000 --> 03:46.000
We respect respectful and inclusive behavior from everyone.

03:46.000 --> 03:48.000
And if you experience anything or witness anything,

03:48.000 --> 03:52.000
please come find me or one of the other volunteers in the room throughout the day.

03:52.000 --> 03:54.000
Thank you for being here.

03:54.000 --> 03:58.000
Community isn't community without the people who participate.

03:58.000 --> 04:01.000
So it's really important that we all come together to support things.

04:01.000 --> 04:04.000
With that in mind, we're going to start with many of these challenges

04:04.000 --> 04:06.000
and how they begin with teams.

04:06.000 --> 04:09.000
Teams don't magically mature on their own.

04:09.000 --> 04:12.000
The way that we make decisions and handle conflict,

04:12.000 --> 04:15.000
share ownership and build trust is learned behavior.

04:15.000 --> 04:17.000
And it's often learned the hard way.

04:17.000 --> 04:21.000
So please welcome Adam, Warren and Elizabeth.
