The story you are thinking of is from The Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy
where the entire alien battle fleet is swallowed by a small dog due to a gross
miscalcluation of scale. Love your aliens though.

The idea you describe, about little aliens, is from Hitchhiker's Guide, I
think.
Anyway, I like this picture a lot - good detail like the grass in the 
cracks and the aliens' scowls and such. Very creative, one of the most
original entries.
