IMAGE DESCRIPTION:

In 1802, King George III commanded William Lambton to
undertake a trigonometrical survey of India. Lambton died
in 1823 and was succeeded by Sir George Everest (as in "Mount"),
who saw the project to its completion in 1843.

The trigonometrical survey of India, a 41 year effort, ranks
as one of history's greatest engineering acheivements. My
entry commemorates this accomplishment.

DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED:

Engin, Volute, Rr, and Gjvrec are tools that I wrote.

I used Engin to generate the lights, the basic textures,
the dome, and the POV main file. Volute creates a column
with a volute capital. I used Rr (as in Read Rib) to create
the human head object. Gjvrec made the tesselated sphere.
All of these hacks use a common C++ class library that is
wrapped around POV.
