View from a hotel room of high-rise buildings.

DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED:

I started off using my standard procedure of modelling using simple placeholders
to work out a
composition. After creating more detailed models of several buildings, I
realized that time was
running out and scaled back my grandiose cityscape to the four buildings shown.
My rendering
time in tests was very high (10+ hours) due to the large number of
reflective/transparent
surfaces inside the room and on the buildings, plus the number of lights in the
scene. I finally
decided to render the buildings, then use the image from that rendering as a
backdrop in the
scene. This one-time 3-hour rendering cut my rendering time for the whole scene
to around
1.5 - 2 hours. I then concentrated on creating the furniture and other fixtures
in the room,
many of which can only be seen as reflections in the window. I still had a
couple of things I
wanted to change (add curtains, work on lighting, etc.), but the deadline drew
nigh as it
always does.

I went through a great many compositions for this image (my original idea was to
focus on a
Poser figure looking out the window), and tried and discarded many different
building designs.
The buildings are combinations of my own imagination and actual buildings in the
area where
I live. Any resemblence to actual cities, living or dead, is purely
coincidental.
