Simple, yet effective.

You should have rotated the pawn and the bishop a bit.
The wood textures should NOT be perfectly aligned.

Artistic - Excellent 1st Entry. Quality wooden chess pieces and board.
Technical - Unfortunately you didn't make any sort of a description of how you
built what. Thus mid range marks for technical.
Concept - Definitely a contrast here!!!

Not much to be added , the scene is quite simple. The
one brain tickling thing is that all the black squares are
identical, as are the white ones. Also the wood grains
line up perfectly with the pieces

Technical: in a scene this simple, small things count
large. To avoid the repetitive squares, either generate
64 unique textures (I woundn't) or create two large boxes
that perfectly overlap. give one a white and the other a
brown/black texture, then group the sixty four boxes you
have already made into two groups of 32 and difference
them out of the appropriate large box.
Also try rotating the wood grain texture slightly so the
lines are not 90 degrees perfect on the pieces

Good concept.

Nice shaping, although the pieces seem too short. Nice
wood textures.

What's the other scene?

Wonderful concept!
One comment tho. The chess pieces seem a bit squat.
I get the feeling they should be taller.
Great texturing.

Just a remark. As far as I understand it, when the wood is turned on a lathe, the wood fibers would be parallel to the axis of rotation.
